Shangri-La Abu Dhabi

Shangri-La is a mystical, harmonious valley, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains in Tibet, or so says James Hilton in his 1933 novel, Lost Horizon.  I would agree, and add that Shangri-La is the hotel that I am at right now, fully equipped with internet, beaches, a gym, bars, clubs, shops, buffets, and even little frozen towels they give you when you get too hot at the pool.

We are here because the Masdar administration felt bad for us. For one thing it’s the Eid Al Fitr Holiday, and most of us cannot go home to our families. The other reason is the lack of facilities and preparedness that we have had to experience for the past month or so of school. From lack of internet at our villa, to less than adequate academic facilities, to miscommunications galore, infinite IT issues, and a bus schedule that changes on an hourly basis, transitioning back into the academic environment has not been easy or straightforward.

So, several students made some very relevant points to the administration, they understood, and surprised us with two nights paid stay at this hotel, complete with two hearty meals per day (I just got back from dinner and am in the midst of a serious food coma).  But things are getting better and we’re all looking forward to the continually improving situation.

Also, last night me and the two other Americans went back the states! Or at least to the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi to watch American Football with a marine the one of the other guys met. Their setup is pretty awesome, ‘barracks’ with a fully stocked bar, grill, ping pong and pool table, weight room, etc.  Needless to say, it felt great to sit on a couch and watch football drinking beers. Bud light never tasted so good.

  2. My Son,
u r hysterically funny. u’r blog is so much fun to read and as usual, I need to worry! Don’t know if I’m lov’in the hairy growth but do it now & move on. Glad some aspects r working out , in regards to meeting some safety-net people but academics need to be more consistent. sure u’ll figure it out w/those who r in the program – growing pains in a new curriculum of great expectations!!

keep the news coming – so, happy that u resilient, adjusting & connecting!

    luv ya,
